Marin Independent Journal January 26, 2009 Marin Charity Group Issues $150,000 to 48 Agencies by Beth Ashley They work hard to do good: last year the 85 active members of the Marin Charitable Association raised more than $150,000, and this month they gave most of it away to 48 agencies in Marin County supporting at-risk youth. The highest award, $8,000, went to the Southern Marin Lightning Basketball Program based in Marin City. The second-highest, $7,200, went to Project Avary, serving children who have a parent in prison or jail. Other awards – some as small as $2,000 – went to a broad spectrum of agencies, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Point Reyes Dance Palace, Family Service Agency, Trips for Kids, and Image for Success. Many were repeat awardees. The only new one was Future Leasers for Peace, run by Jonathan Kathrein of San Rafael, who gives in-school lessons to children on how to get along. “He’s an amazing young man,” said association president Irene Tabet of Mill Valley, who noted she is impressed – and touched – by the work many agencies are doing. Marin Charitable Association began in 1961 as a group of Marin General Hospital volunteers who raised money to support the cardiac care unit. Three years later, the group changed to focus on Marin children and teens. The woman raise money with a number of small campaigns and two large annual events; a wine dinner/auction in September and the Floral Fling Luncheon, featuring a demonstration of flower arranging to be held April 22 at Stone Tree Golf Club in Novato. Association members interview each of the grant applications and make recommendations for funding. Tabet has been a member of Marin Charitable for six years and became president this year.. She works five days a week with husband Peter Tabet in financial services for Northwestern Mutual Life, but “finally had time to do more than just write a check.” |
