HISTORY OF MARIN CHARITABLE

Marin Charitable is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization celebrating 60 years of service that raises monies in order to provide grants to nonprofit organizations with programs serving school-aged children within Marin County. Marin Charitable is a registered 501(c)(3) charity.
We are a Candid GuideStar Gold Seal rated organization.

Established in 1961 by a group of Marin General Hospital volunteers, it was originally a fundraising effort supporting the Cardiac Care Unit, but soon changed focus in order to help Marin County children and teens. In 1964, the Marin Charitable Foundation became incorporated as an independent, nonprofit entity. In 1977, the organization changed its name to Marin Charitable Association, and later (2010) shortened to Marin Charitable. Marin Charitable expanded its membership in 2008 by establishing a junior level of the organization for women who want to give back to the community, but who may have less time due to family and career commitments.

At the time of inception, community need was primarily in the areas of health and education. Today we have broadened our mission to include a range of programs that provide critical support, education and enrichment for school aged children with limited opportunities. Marin Charitable’s role is now more vital than ever in helping kids achieve their full potential into adulthood.

Marin Charitable plans and hosts at least three major fundraising events each year. Additional funds are raised from the business community and contributions from individuals and foundations. 100% of the proceeds raised are donated to worthwhile nonprofit programs in Marin; Members make a commitment of their time. Whether it is making an in-person visit to an organization applying for grants or helping by volunteering with one of our grantee organizations, members are willing to roll up their sleeves to help ensure that all children in Marin County have access to opportunities.
